Covid-19 ] Journal d’une Mauricienne confinée
Reena Devi Kissoon-Leste knows how to rock her daily routine while being locked down. Yeah!

The life of everyone changed since the confinement started. I, however, have always worked from home as a one-person design company, so it’s not much ofa change to my daily routine. Thus I can’t complain much as I am at least free of being the chauffeur and driving Tasya, my daughter, and Michel, my husband around  . No more activities for the little one nor therapies for the hubby! Trust me I only need the uniform to go full “Driver-Mode”!

Do you know what was crazy at the start? Picture this:

Tasya wakes up earlier than me and struggles to get me up.

She makes pancakes for breakfast while I am still trying to get out of dreamland.

My daughter takes her bath then rushes to her Zoom meeting with the class teacher and classmates.

You see that! I got confused at one point. Who is the responsible adult here?!

Other plus points: I already watched “La Casa de Papel”, season 4 (yep!!!), Luna-Nera, Ozark (all 3 seasons in 2days!) and looking for my next one! Just imagine the thrill of watching episodes after episodes and no need to wake up early the next day? Thank God there’s Netflix! Now waiting for the Walking Dead to be back. I need to sharpen my food hunt skills and what better show to learn from?

Yes, I have also cooked more in these two weeks than in my thirteen years of married life and poor Tasyahas to bear with my “horrible food” as she calls it!  Those who know of my cooking skills may confirm. Just ask my mom. She is more concerned about Tasyaand Michel surviving my cooking than succumbing to Corona. The worst part is the pics of friends post of their amazing breakfast, lunch or dinner! A friend posted a pic of dal puri today and I could literally taste it! God ammissing that! I even surprised myself asking Michel what I should cook the next day! Wow!!! That’s history in the making. Last night Tasya even thought my Bhaakris (rotis) look awful but taste good, so it’s still a compliment! (She inherited my dark sense of humour apparently). Only lucky one seems to be Tigrou, the cat! He must be so relieved to eat cat food instead of my food.

Since work is equal to nil these days, I have been sketching like crazy and enjoying it! Art has been therapeutic for me since Michel’s accident and each line has a story to tell! Some of my friends eagerly await the next one and it’s urging me to upscale my skills. Who knows what might come out of all this? An expo? Acolouring book? OR BOTH?!OMG! This confinement is driving me crazy with ideas!

To be sincere, the one thing that I miss like crazy is my Coca! I am so looking forward for all of us to be safe and get rid of the virus from the island, just so I can hold another coke bottle in my arms!!! I often dream of a HUGE chilled glass of coke with ice cubes swimming in it. After the confinement, I am going to stock up on Coke.   Pile them up and build a pyramid!

Talking of pyramids, it reminds me of the Mummies. Some will be buried like Pharaohs with their toilet paper stock used to mummify them but there is one thing I would like to share. Despite all the crazy buyers stocking up with greed, the vegetable sellers building castles on the despair of others, supermarkets joining in to scam us with their high prices, I wish to point out how many never stopped being humans. People sharing and helping out, like my family, neighbours and friends who, while applying the safety measures, help us out.

Last thing! I always complained about my huge boobs but now am happy that at least I can use my bras as face masks if need be  . Full protection mode!

Stay in, stay safe!
